Let's learn how to say ''I can verb''. verb できます!!

Hello guys!
How are you doing?
By the way, Can you say ''cat'' in Japanese?
Huh? Don't ask stupid question?
Sorry about that. :/
Cuz I can't say ''cat'' in Spanish.(´・ω・)
Anyway, In this lesson, we'll learn how to say ''I can verb''.
It's not too difficult I guess.
Let's have a look. :)

How to conjugate verbs to ''can verb'' is quite simple.
Both of ru-verb and u-verb are conjugated as the same way.
How to conjugate verbs is just replace last letter ''u'' with ''e'' and add ''ます''.
Let's have a look.

Verb To Speak, u-verb
話す HANASU + E + ます = HANASEます 話せます (Can speak)
Verb To Swim, u-verb
泳ぐ OYOGU + E + ます = OYOGEます   泳げます (Can swim)

Verb To Sleep, ru-verb
寝る NERU + E + ます = NEREます 寝れます (Can sleep)
Verb To Walk, ru-verb
歩く ARUKU + E + ます = ARUKEます 歩けます (Can walk)

That's easy enough, isn't it?

And here is a tip.
''To understand'' could be translated as 分かる or 理解する in Japanese.
''分かる'' CANNOT be conjugated like 分かれます.
However, ''理解する'' CAN be conjugated like 理解できます.
You can say 私は理解できます。as ''I can understand''.
But You can't say 私は分かれます。.
Of course, You can say 私は分かります。as ''I understand''.
It's complicated,isn't it?
If it bothers you I'm gonna suggest you that you just say 分かります as both of ''I can understand'' and '' I understand''.
Because it sounds natural. :)
We basically don't say 理解します in a conversation. hehe
You got it?

And here is one more thing.
Verb する (to do).
In Japanese, some of nouns can be used as a verb with する. You already know this, don't you?
For example,
勉強 + する to study
説明 + する to explain
And する is an irregular verb.
する is not categorised both of ru-verb and u-verb.
する is changed itno できる as ''can do''.
I do it. 私はそれをします。
I can do it. 私はそれを''できます''。*できます is spoken language. btw します is spoken language of する.
Just remember that if verb ends する it's always changed into できます.
勉強する → 勉強できます
説明する → 説明できます
Let me give you somemore examples.
I can cook. 私は料理できます。
I can drive. 私は運転できます。

Does it make sense to you?

Let's have a look at some example sentences. :)

・私はエミネムの曲を歌えます。(I can sing a song by Eminem)
・私はレストランに行けません。(I can't go to the restraurant.)
・私は犬を飼えます。(I can have a dog.)
・あなたは料理できますか?(Can you cook diner?)
・私たちは一緒に写真を撮れます。(We can take a picture together.)
・私は高くとべます。(I can jump high.)

Hmm, I think that's all.
I hope my explanation was enough.
There is another way to say 'can verb' in Japanese.
But I don't wanna confuse you.
So please get used to the way above for now.
I just write another way as well below.
Don't focus on it for now.
Anyway, let's do some exercises. :)

Verb to Can verb
Conjugate verbs in branckets.
・私は日本語を( 話す )。(I can speak Japanese.)
・彼女は( 泳ぐ )。(She can swim.)
・私は8マイル( 歩く )。(I can walk 8mile.)
・彼は( 運転する )。(He can drive.)
・私は日本語の文法を( 説明する )。(I can explain Japanese grammar.)

How was today's lesson?
It was not difficult, wasn't it?
If you have any questions plz ask me anytime. :)
I'll call it a day.
Thanks.
Peace.

ANSWERS.
Verb to Can verb
Conjugate verbs in branckets.
・私は日本語を( 話せます )。(I can speak Japanese.)
・彼女は( 泳げます )。(She can swim.)
・私は8マイル( 歩けます )。(I can walk 8mile.)
・彼は( 運転できます )。(He can drive.)
・私は日本語の文法を( 説明できます )。(I can explain Japanese grammar.)

The another way to say ''can verb''.
Do you remember that some verbs can be used as a noun when attaching こと?
As for example,
Speaking, 話すこと
Speaking English is fun. 話すことは楽しいです。
Swimming, 泳ぐこと
I'm good at swimming. 私は泳ぐことが得意です。

And then you can say 私は ''話すこと'' ができます。as I can speak.
I think it's better to translate it as I am able to speak.
Cuz both of them are an infinitive.
Anyway, this is the another way to say "I can verb''.
Let me give you some examples.
They're the same sentences as exercises above tho.

・私は日本語を ''話すこと'' ができます。(I can speak Japanese.)
・彼女は ''泳ぐこと'' ができます。(She can swim.)
・私は8マイル ''歩くこと'' ができます。(I can walk 8mile.)
・彼は ''運転すること'' ができます。(He can drive.)
・私は日本語の文法を ''説明すること'' ができます。(I can explain Japanese grammar.)

As for me, this way to say is emphasising ''verb''.
Both ways are correct grammar and polite enough.
That's it. :)
